New Officials Guide

Registration

Begin your registration with the OSAA. They are the state governing body for Oregon high school activities. The registration cost is $90. Please register with a primary email that you regularly check.

Once complete, the OSAA will mail you a packet with your rule book, case book, and OSAA Football Patch.

Certification

After registration you must complete the following before working any contests:

  1. Concussion Management Video Training ~10min
  2. OSAA Discriminatory Acts Training ~10min
  3. Football Rules Exam – As a new official, you will work with a group mentor to complete your exam.

Uniform

The Mid-Western Football Officials Association will finance the cost of your uniform starter package. During the season, the cost of your gear is deducted from your first two pay distributions.

Looking the part and wearing the proper uniform is important for your game presence as an official. Please fill out the uniform guide, so we can order your gear!

New Officials Training

New officials training is at 6PM before our general association meetings.

Attendance in person is strongly encouraged. However, we provide a Zoom option and we post recordings to the members area of our website for review.

Meeting Location

General Meetings

General meetings are 7-830PM at the OSU Western Building in Corvallis. The majority of this meeting is for general association training.

Time Commitment

As a new official, you’re expected to attend both the new officials training and general meeting. Beginning in August, we have meetings every Tuesday, then every other Tuesday from September through October.

The number of games your work depends on your availability. We service programs from Waldport up to Nestucca and east toward Sweet Home. Games are approximately 2 hours long. During the season, you’ll work at a variety of locations.

Compensation

As an independent contractor, game fees are based on the level of assignment. Paychecks are deposited to your Arbiter Pay account every two weeks.

  • $75 Sub High School
  • $80 Sub-Varsity
  • $104 Varsity

Travel expenses: $10 is applied to each game set with additional qualifying travel reimbursed at the federal rate.

Availability & Blocks

Our commissioner is responsible for scheduling our games. He needs us to maintain our availability throughout the season! The scheduling process can take many hours each week to ensure proper coverage, so please keep your availability current.

Getting Started – Rule 2

There is a lot to learn, but you don’t need to know everything on day one. Every new official begins their study of the football definitions, also known as Rule 2.
